Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Radiation Safety Officer opportunity in East TN.
Job DescriptionThe Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the site radiation protection program to support safe pre-production and production operations. This role ensures compliance with applicable radiological safety regulations and company requirements while supporting operational readiness and safe work execution.
The RSO will establish and manage the site radiological permitting program, including development of Radiological Work Permits (RWPs), procedures, exposure controls, and monitoring requirements. Working closely with operations, engineering, maintenance, and ES&H personnel, the RSO promotes a strong culture of radiological safety and continuous improvement across the facility.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and maintain the site Radiation Protection Program and radiological permitting processes in compliance with regulatory and company requirements
- Establish and administer Radiological Work Permits (RWPs), radiological procedures, and work control requirements
- Conduct radiological hazard assessments, contamination surveys, exposure evaluations, and workplace monitoring activities
- Implement radiological monitoring, dosimetry, contamination control, and exposure tracking programs
- Provide radiological safety oversight for work activities, operational readiness reviews, and hazard analyses
- Investigate radiological incidents and recommend corrective and preventive actions
- Support emergency preparedness and radiological response activities
- Develop and deliver radiation safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors
- Maintain radiological records, permits, reports, and compliance documentation
- Interface with regulatory agencies, auditors, and site management regarding radiation protection matters
- Collaborate with operations and ES&H teams to integrate radiological safety into daily operations and support continuous improvement initiatives
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Radiation Protection, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Environmental Science, or a related technical field is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- 5+ years of experience in radiation protection, health physics, or radiological safety in a nuclear, industrial, research, or regulated environment
- Experience developing and implementing radiation protection and radiological permitting programs
- Strong knowledge of radiation protection principles, contamination control, dosimetry, and applicable regulatory requirements
- Experience supporting radiological work planning, RWPs, operational readiness, and field oversight activities required
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with personnel at all levels
- Relevant certifications such as Certified Health Physicist (CHP), NRRPT, or equivalent are preferred
- Requires proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and radiological data management systems
- Must be able to work effectively in both office and industrial/radiological environments
- Experience supporting startup, commissioning, or pre‑operational readiness activities
- Experience in DOE, NRC, or other highly regulated nuclear or radiological environments
- Familiarity with Process Safety Management (PSM) and integrated ES&H programs
- Experience supporting emergency response and incident investigation activities
Job Requirements
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance, if required
