Registered Nurse – Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Facility: Johnson City Medical Center
Location: 400 N State of Franklin Rd, Johnson City, TN 37604, United States
Start Date: 03/15/2026
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Night, 3x12 or 4x12 (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
Schedule: Choice of 36/36 or 36/48 ; every other weekend required
Charting System: EPIC
Float Required: Yes (PCU/Stepdown; may float to MS with 1:7 ratios)

Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (PCU) provides safe, competent, and evidence-based nursing care to adult patients requiring intermediate-level monitoring and treatment. The nurse functions within a Progressive Care/Stepdown environment, collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, and supports high-quality patient outcomes in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver patient-centered care using the nursing process and evidence-based practice

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and continuous cardiac and telemetry monitoring

  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and respond appropriately to clinical changes and emergencies

  • Manage and titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips as clinically indicated

  • Provide care for post-cardiac procedures including angiograms, cardiac catheterizations, and post-MI patients

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate plans of care

  • Educate patients and families on disease processes, treatments, and discharge planning

  • Utilize Rapid Response and Code Teams appropriately during patient deterioration

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EPIC electronic medical record

  • Adhere to infection control, isolation precautions, and patient safety standards

  • Support nursing students and participate in clinical education as required

Required Qualifications
  • Licensure: Active RN license (license in hand required at submission)

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 2 years of recent RN experience

    • PCU/Stepdown or cardiovascular experience required

    • First-time travelers accepted

  • Certifications:

    • BLS (AHA)

    • ACLS (AHA)

    • NIHSS

  • Other Requirements:

    • EPIC experience preferred

    • Must reside greater than 100 miles from facility service area

    • Ability to float and accept increased ratios when assigned to MS units

Clinical Skills & Competencies
  • Cardiac telemetry (on-unit and remote monitoring)

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias

  • Cardiac and vasoactive drip management

  • Post-cardiac angiogram and catheterization care

  • IV therapy, central line care, PICC management, and blood product administration

  • Respiratory support including BiPAP/CPAP, HFNC, and oxygen delivery systems

  • Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur Evac)

  • Insulin drip titration and endocrine management

  • Isolation precautions and PPE compliance
