What Would You Do As a SANITATION EQUIPMENT OPERATORAs a Full‑Time Sanitation Equipment Operator with the City of Johnson City, you will engage in challenging semi‑skilled work that involves operating residential, commercial, and recycling sanitation equipment. This role requires you to efficiently load and unload collected materials while ensuring the safe operation of specialized maintenance and construction equipment. You'll be responsible for a variety of tasks, including operating front‑loading and rear‑loading vehicles, managing recycling collection equipment, and utilizing heavy machinery such as backhoes and forklifts.
Your position will demand manual dexterity and skill in handling complex equipment, along with the independence to perform tasks while adhering to safety protocols. You may also oversee subordinate operators and play a pivotal role in maintaining a clean and environmentally friendly community.
To excel as a Full‑Time Sanitation Equipment Operator with the City of Johnson City, you will need a robust skill set and relevant experience. A thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing automotive equipment operation is essential, along with familiarity with the operating and repair characteristics of heavy public works equipment. Understanding the component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of various machinery is crucial, as well as a well‑rounded comprehension of the city’s layout, including streets and alleyways.
The ability to service equipment and perform minor repairs is imperative, along with the capacity to understand and execute both written and oral instructions. Strong reporting skills are also necessary for maintaining records of your activities. Additionally, physical strength and agility will be required to operate equipment, especially under challenging weather conditions, while manual dexterity is essential for handling machinery effectively.
A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with relevant experience in operating trucks and specialized automotive equipment, and a valid commercial driver’s license from the State of Tennessee.
- Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and other regulations governing automotive equipment operation.
- Thorough knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of heavy automotive and similar public works equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the component parts, operating principles, and maintenance needs of equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of city and county location and layout of streets and alleyways; ability to service various types of equipment and to make minor running repairs; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and to prepare required reports; skill in the operation of moderately complex equipment; physical strength and agility sufficient to operate equipment in occasionally adverse weather conditions;
manual dexterity required to operate machinery. - Acceptable Experience and Training:
Completion of high school diploma or GED is desirable; some experience in the operation and routine maintenance of trucks specialized automotive equipment or related automotive equipment; any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. - Additional Requirements:
Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee.
