Responsibilities
Performs any combination of laboring, equipment operation, semi-skilled building and mechanical trades assignments involving the maintenance and repairing traffic signals, street lighting equipment, premises and property of municipality and the provision of scheduled and emergency services within the Public Works Department. Responds to service calls and other emergencies as directed during normal business hours and is available to be on-call outside of normal working hours.
Performs other duties as assigned. Maintains and repairs traffic signal equipment: replaces lamps; cleans lenses and reflectors; replaces broken and missing hardware; performs preventative maintenance and corrosion control. Diagnoses malfunctions, and installs, maintains, operates, and repairs pre-timed semi-automatic, fully automatic electromechanical solid state and microprocessor controllers, minor movement controllers, pedestrian timers, detector amplifiers, conflict monitors. Operates aerial bucket truck to replace components of traffic signals, including bulbs, lenses, wiring, fuses, and other traffic signal head parts.
Installs and maintains traffic signs and markers; pavement markings; maintains sign inventory; installs and repairs traffic lights; and other traffic control devices in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Maintains inventory and maintenance records of installed signing, signals, and other traffic control devices. Hangs signs and decorations on municipal facilities and premises using hand and power tools.
Maintains and repairs buildings, equipment and facilities utilizing basic skills associated with the construction and mechanical maintenance trades. Evaluate, repair and maintain plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems in city buildings. Perform routine facility maintenance, including cleaning. Prioritizes and schedules repairs and maintenance of city owned facilities as needed. Spreads and levels earth, sand and gravel using public works vehicles, hand and power tools;
lifts, carries and holds materials, cleans tools, equipment, materials and work areas. Cleans and repairs catch basins, manholes, culverts and storm drains using public works equipment, hand and power tools. Operates, services and maintains motor grader, endloader, backhoe, tractors, mowers, street sweeper and related public works equipment; assists Maintenance Mechanic in the repair and maintenance of public works and other municipal vehicles and related equipment;
checks gas, oil and fluids; washes vehicles. Removes snow and sands/salts streets and sidewalks using graders, dump trucks, end loaders, snow blowers and related equipment. Drives trucks equipped with dump body, tanks and peripheral equipment to transport loose materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rocks and related materials to job site; loads truck by hand or by operating mechanical loader. Erects barricades, fences and rails to protect the public from hazardous conditions.
Assists in flood control and related emergency situations. Maintains and repairs buildings, equipment and facilities utilizing basic skills associated with the construction and mechanical maintenance trades. Performs related work as required. Regular work attendance is required.
High school diploma or equivalent. Basic electrical knowledge. Any combination of general construction, repair, maintenance, equipment operation experience of at least two years in a road construction or public works setting. Possession of a valid class A CDL with air brake option or the ability to obtain within 9 months of hire. Ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician Level I Certification within 12 months of hire and level II certification within 30 months of hire.
Knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools used in various public works maintenance and construction functions; knowledge of the operating characteristics of heavy and specialized equipment; ability to perform a variety of laboring and semi-skilled tasks in the operation, maintenance and repair of various types of public works equipment and building structures and premises. Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
ability to understand potential hazards and learn safety precautions.
Conduct outside work involving frequent standing and walking. Work involves lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying heavy objects and materials used in public works maintenance, solid waste removal and construction tasks such as intermittent periods of sustained physical activity involving climbing, crawling, bending, stooping and crouching. Eye/hand/foot coordination, manual and finger dexterity, acceptable hearing and related cognitive abilities. The employee may be exposed to physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment and also sometimes working in hazardous areas under hazardous conditions.
