Full-time (40 hours per week)
General ResponsibilityTo perform clinical dental services and preventive dental care in a community health center setting. In the absence of the Dental Director, the Staff Dentist supervises the Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists. The position requires someone who has a comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settings; knowledge of the principles and practice of modern dentistry as related to public health organizations and community health programs;
and current social and economic problems pertaining to public health and their impact on primary health care.
- Examining individuals requesting care, diagnosing their dental/oral conditions, prescribing and carrying out, or directing others in carrying out as appropriate the scope of service, appropriate dental/oral treatment, or referring individuals for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines.
- Knowledge of digital radiography preferred; recording patient‑dentist transactions as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided.
- Complete referrals, collect data and other records or paperwork as required by the corporation.
- Paperless charting experience preferred.
- Educate individuals on oral health conditions and promote disease prevention.
- Serve on the dental staff and other center committees as assigned.
- Prepare specific reports requested by the Dental Director.
- Assist in the provision of continuing education, on‑the‑job training, and orientation of staff as requested.
- Design, develop, and implement Dental Department policies, protocols and procedures directed by the Dental Director in compliance with current professional standards.
- Provide technical assistance and health education to the community as requested.
- Participate in short‑ and long‑term program planning for the Dental Department and agency, including development of goals and objectives.
- Consult the Dental Director on dental and oral health issues; report information to the CEO as appropriate.
- Travel as necessary to fulfill corporation needs and attend meetings to represent the corporation or Dental Department.
- Coordinate and integrate the corporation’s dental programs and services with other corporate programs for the welfare of patients.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and center rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing dentistry and clinical care, including personnel issues, workplace safety, public health and confidentiality.
- Participate in recruitment and retention activities of the corporation.
- Perform other related tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives as directed by the Dental Director.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times with regard to personal, medical, dental and billing information; participate in all QI activities including Peer Review.
- Graduation from an accredited dental school.
- Completion of an accredited general practice residency program preferred.
- Unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of RI.
- Current CPR (BLS) certification, ACLS preferred.
- Rhode Island DPA and DEA registrations.
- Medicare and Medicaid Provider numbers.
- Knowledge of public health principles and practices preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills required.
- Ability to maintain appropriate clinical privileges; hospital privileges preferred.
- Maintain client confidentiality in accordance with state, federal laws and Tri‑County policies.
- Bilingual skills a plus.
- Demonstrate an understanding of everyone’s experiences and ensure service delivery respects each moment.
