Construction Inspector
Job Description
The Construction Inspector performs field inspections and materials testing on active construction sites to ensure work meets project specifications and quality standards. This role involves testing soils, concrete, asphalt, and reinforcing steel, accurately documenting results using a tablet, and working independently across various commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. Responsibilities
+ Perform a variety of inspections on active construction sites to verify compliance with project specifications and standards.
+ Conduct field testing of construction materials including soils, concrete, asphalt, and reinforcing steel.
+ Use a nuclear gauge to perform density and compaction testing in accordance with established procedures and safety guidelines.
+ Carry and handle buckets and other testing materials and equipment as needed for sampling and testing activities.
+ Accurately record and document test results and inspection findings using a tablet and designated reporting systems.
+ Read and interpret basic maps, plans, and site layouts to locate test areas and understand project requirements.
+ Communicate clearly with site personnel, project teams, and internal staff regarding test results, site conditions, and any issues observed.
+ Work independently in the field, traveling to multiple construction sites daily as assigned.
+ Pick up and return nuclear gauge equipment at designated locations when not using personally assigned equipment.
+ Maintain testing equipment in good working order and follow proper handling, storage, and safety protocols.
+ Support a culture of safety by following all site safety rules and company procedures while working on construction sites.
+ Pursue and maintain relevant certifications (such as ACI or NICET) as opportunities are provided to enhance technical expertise and career growth.
Essential Skills
+ Experience or strong interest in construction, construction inspection, or construction materials testing.
+ Ability to perform inspections and testing of construction materials such as concrete, asphalt, soil, and reinforcing steel.
+ Capability to safely use and learn to operate a nuclear gauge for field testing.
+ Good verbal communication skills to interact effectively with project teams and site personnel.
+ Willingness to learn and to develop new technical skills and certifications.
+ Comfort working outside in varying weather conditions on active construction sites.
+ Basic map reading ability to navigate to and within project sites.
+ Basic math skills to support testing, measurements, and documentation.
+ Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and handle daily travel to multiple job sites.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Prior experience in construction inspection or materials testing is a plus.
+ Familiarity with concrete testing procedures and practices is beneficial.
+ ACI certification or ACI concrete-related certifications are highly valued.
+ NICET certification or progress toward NICET certification in relevant disciplines is an advantage.
+ Comfort using tablets or mobile devices for field data entry and documentation.
+ Interest in obtaining industry-recognized certifications that support career advancement.
+ Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, reliable test results.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, with work performed at various private new construction and land development sites, including commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. The Construction Inspector works a standard 40-hour workweek, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some night shifts as needed and opportunities for overtime, especially as weather conditions improve. The work involves frequent travel to different job sites and a high degree of independence, as you will often work alone while performing inspections and tests.
