Job Description

Position Type: Elementary Teacher, Full-Time, Non-Exempt, U9 (Nine months)

Reports To: Principal, Assistant Principal

Relates To: District Administrators, Program Coordinator, Student Service Coordinator, Special Service Coordinator, Faculty and Staff, Parents, PTA and Community Groups

Salary and Benefits: In accordance with collective bargaining agreement between the Board of School Inspectors of School District 86 and the Council #86 of the American Federation of Teachers
- Local 604 (link).

Maximum 10 years of full-time Certified Teaching Experience

Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the building principal, the classroom teacher creates a flexible elementary grade program and establishes a learning environment that supports student growth and development. The teacher builds rapport with students, motivates them to acquire skills, attitudes, and knowledge, fosters positive relationships with parents and colleagues.

Qualifications:

  • Professional Educator License with Self-Contained General Education Endorsement or Required Endorsement.
  • Demonstrated leadership, public and community relations, and academic competence.
  • Effective behavior management skills.
  • Ability to structure a classroom to maximize student learning.
  • Strong communication skills with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum and text used.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Implement all district policies in the classroom.
  • Ensure equal opportunity education for every student.
  • Teach English Language Arts, social science, mathematics, science, health (art, music, P.E.) as per board curriculum and appropriate activities.
  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter.
  • Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and provide individualized and small group instruction.
  • Use varied instructional strategies to present material.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to maximize instructional time.
  • Maintain standards of student behavior for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, maintain records, prepare required reports.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means regarding progress.
  • Identify student needs and collaborate with staff to address health, attitude, learning problems.
  • Seek assistance from principal or support personnel to improve instructional program or solve specific problems.
  • Create effective learning environment through displays, bulletin boards, and learning centers.
  • Maintain professional competence via in-service professional development.
  • Requisition instructional materials and supplies as required.
  • Attend all required meetings (faculty, parent-teacher, etc.).
  • Prepare for, conduct, and attend parent-teacher conferences as necessary.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day.
  • Administer group standardized tests per state and district protocols.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development.

Physical Demands: Regular standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing. Reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. Occasionally lift up to 20 pounds. Requires close and distance vision and focusing ability.

Work Environment: Quiet to moderate noise level. Primarily indoors, occasional outdoors. In‑district and out‑of‑town travel as required for training and duties.
