Jr. High Teacher – 8th Grade Science/Math ) Job Description

Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the building principal, the classroom teacher is responsible for providing students with learning activities and experiences that support intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. The teacher designs and implements lessons to help students develop skills for success in society.

Education, Experience, and License:

  • Professional Educator License with Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Science, and Science endorsements (or required endorsement).
  • Demonstrated leadership, community relations, and academic competence.
  • Effective behavior management skills.
  • Ability to structure a classroom and maximize student learning.
  • Strong communication skills with various stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of curriculum outlines, textbooks, and course content.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement district policies in the classroom.
  • Guarantee equal educational opportunity for all students.
  • Plan and deliver lesson plans for the assigned curriculum.
  • Follow state and district guidelines for subject matter instruction.
  • Use differentiated strategies and materials to meet student needs.
  • Use data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Collaborate with grade‑level and content teams to develop curricula.
  • Supervise paraprofessionals, student teachers, and volunteers.
  • Integrate technology into teaching and learning.
  • Help students improve study habits and self‑assessment.
  • Assess student achievement with formal and informal tests.
  • Model positive behavior and support the district mission.
  • Create a safe and supportive learning environment.
  • Manage classroom behavior per district standards.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Order instructional materials and supplies as needed.
  • Attend faculty meetings, parent‑teacher conferences, and other required meetings.
  • Conduct parent‑teacher conferences as scheduled.
  • Supervise students during out‑of‑classroom activities.
  • Administer group standardized tests following state and district protocols.
  • Participate in curriculum‑development programs.
  • Maintain ongoing professional growth.

Supervisory Role: Student classroom (Paraprofessionals, student teachers, volunteers, and in‑classroom activities).

Communication

Skills:

  • Strong public and interpersonal communication.
  • Clear oral and written expression.
  • Ability to compose correspondences, reports, and other documents.
  • Effective presentation and facilitation of questions.
  • Shows courtesy, tact, and respect.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to perform basic math with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Interpret and follow written and oral instructions, diagrams, or schedules.
  • Identify and define problems, analyze data, and draw valid conclusions.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Promote a harassment‑free environment.
  • Build teamwork and collaborative relationships.
  • Adapt to new office equipment, computers, and software.
  • Work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Understand and comply with district, board, state, and federal regulations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain accurate files and records.

Physical Demands: Standing, walking, speaking, hearing, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching; occasional lifting up to 20 pounds; visual demands include close and distance vision.

Work Environment: Indoor and occasional outdoor work; moderate noise; frequent interruptions and deadlines; occasional district travel.

Salary and Benefits: Salary and benefits provided in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Board of School Inspectors of School District 86 and the AFL‑CIO Local 604.
