Classroom Intern; Unpaid

At Catholic Charities Diocese of Joliet, the Head Start program offers an unpaid Classroom Intern position focused on early childhood education. The role is designed for individuals who wish to contribute to a supportive, mission‑driven environment that values dignity and respect for all participants.

• Assist the teacher in adhering to the Department of Health and Human Services, Head Start Education Performance Standards, and the State of Illinois Day Care Licensing Standards.
• Support the teacher and site supervisor with all required teacher training duties and internship obligations.
• Help maintain a high‑quality developmental experience for the children.
• Carry out additional duties as assigned within the position’s guidelines.

• Be familiar with the Head Start/Early Head Start program goals and philosophy.
• Assist the teaching staff in carrying out the daily schedule.
• Help prepare daily educational materials and set up, organize, and care for the classroom.
• Provide active supervision of children at all times.
• Assist in planning field trips or special events for children and parents.
• Work one‑to‑one or in small groups to support children’s progress in development.
• Facilitate smooth transitions during activity changes.
• Maintain a generally positive outlook toward others and the learning environment.

• Minimum age 16 with a strong desire to work with children.
• Completed an “Introduction to Child Care” or “Child Development” course within the past 12 months.
• At least three college or university credits in Child Development or Early Childhood Education.
• Willingness to comply with all relevant health, educational, and licensing standards.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. without restriction.
• Patience, creativity, and nurturing skills.
• Successful background clearance, physical, and Tuberculosis (TB) test.
• Reliable transportation and proof of liability insurance.
