About Joliet
The Exxon Mobil Joliet Refinery is located about 40 miles southwest of Chicago in Channahon, Illinois. The Joliet Refinery is the second newest refinery in the United States and will celebrate its 50th year in 2022. It is the center of Exxon Mobil’s Midwest integrated operations and includes pipelines, lubes production, distribution and fuels marketing. The refinery processes nearly 250,000 barrels of crude per day into gasoline, ultra-low sulfur diesel, asphalt and other products.

Role and Responsibilities

We are seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer to join us at our Joliet facility. Senior Chemical Process Engineers lead improvements to unit performance in safety, production and reliability in a dynamic team environment. You will think strategically, execute thoughtfully, and collaborate across many teams and levels. You will serve as a senior process technical resource, providing technical and operational expertise to address complex processes across business teams.

What you will do

  • Mentoring less experienced engineers on design practices, unit health monitoring, and troubleshooting
  • Provide off-hours support of abnormal and non-routine operations, including unit Turnarounds
  • Aiding in the development of long term vision and strategy for product line improvements
  • Organizing and designing plant testing and product trials
  • Serve as a senior resource either serving as or working with supervisors on the team to set clear objectives and align priorities for the technical team
  • Influence others and drive toward solutions without direct authority
  • Work in a team environment with other engineering disciplines, operations, and mechanical personnel and interface with corporate technology support
  • Interface with 3rd party vendors for cost optimizations as well as developing and driving solutions
  • Lead process safety activities on the business team, including Hazard and Operability Reviews (HAZOPs) and Risk Assessments with closure plans
  • Lead or support incident investigations as technical lead
  • Support development and implementation of capital projects to drive margin or mitigate SHE risk
  • Provide assistance in the field during plant startups, shutdowns or upsets
  • Demonstrate courage of conviction to drive healthy tension for fit-for-purpose outcomes within the team
About You

Skills and Qualifications
  • B.S. Chemical Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in a chemical engineering plant with technical fuels/chemicals manufacturing roles
Preferred Qualifications / Experience
  • Process design experience
  • Familiarity with advanced control strategies/optimization software
  • Working knowledge of RBI practices (corrosion damage mechanisms/mitigations, saltation, etc)
  • Risk assessment and HAZOP experience
  • Understanding of safety relief limits (modelling and evaluations)
  • Demonstrated understanding of modelling software (PROII, ASPEN, etc)
  • Kinetic Modelling (SOL, KBC Profimatics, etc)
