Primary Purpose
Works on larger jobs, small projects, and routine work under the guidance of an experienced engineer or technician, focusing on electrical power distribution equipment and associated control circuits to ensure proper electrical operation.
Testing Group work is on transmission and distribution substation equipment.
Distribution Automation work is on distribution equipment, generally outside substations.
Thermographer work involves utilizing Infrared Thermography and Corona/UV scans on substation equipment.
Battery Specialist work maintains batteries and battery chargers inside substations.
Corrosion Control Group work is on transmission and distribution equipment.
Position may require extended hours, including 24/7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
Primary Duties- Dist Automation – Performs well‑defined testing assignments under guidance of an experienced engineer or technician (preventive and corrective maintenance on supervisory distribution automation equipment). (70%)
- Dist Automation – Evaluates the effectiveness of the current distribution system design (analyzes and interprets field data from defined field tests). (20%)
- Dist Automation – Evaluates effectiveness of current technical systems and processes; participates on teams with distribution engineering and manufacturers to implement new designs. (5%)
- Dist Automation – Participates in training (attends Com Ed, vendor and university classes; conducts training). (5%)
- Testing Group – Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on distribution and transmission relays, communications equipment, power reclosers, etc., following guidelines in the Field Reference and Maintenance Procedures manuals. (35%)
- Testing Group – Conducts basic hands‑on acceptance and in‑service testing of transmission and distribution equipment (transformers, circuit breakers, control and relay panels, SCADA, etc.) per Field Reference Manual guidelines. (20%)
- Testing Group – Assists in restoring malfunctioning transmission and distribution equipment under emergency conditions through hands‑on testing as outlined in the Field Reference and Maintenance Procedures manuals. (20%)
- Testing Group – Receives, participates, and provides some on‑the‑job and formal classroom training. (15%)
- Testing Group – Completes required paperwork (reports, test data, blueprint corrections, relay settings, etc.) to document work performed. (10%)
- Thermography – Performs preventive maintenance infrared thermography scans of substation equipment per assigned schedule. (50%)
- Thermography – Performs preventive maintenance corona/UV scans of substation equipment per assigned schedule. (20%)
- Thermography – Performs analysis of infrared thermography and corona/UV scan findings, initiating and prioritizing corrective actions as required. (15%)
- Thermography – Performs SF₆ gas scans and analysis to identify gas leak locations on substation equipment. (15%)
- Battery Specialist – Maintains specified station batteries in a manner compliant with NERC requirements. (70%)
- Battery Specialist – Performs annual preventive maintenance battery inspections on station batteries and chargers per annual schedules. (10%)
- Battery Specialist – Identifies and performs minor corrective maintenance on station and microwave batteries and chargers as necessary. (10%)
- Battery Specialist – Assists substation construction and/or contractors as a technical expert for major CM maintenance on station and microwave batteries and chargers. (10%)
- Corrosion Control Group – Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on buried distribution and transmission lines, microwave towers, reverse current switches, ISPs, etc., following Com Ed and corrosion mitigation standards. (35%)
- Corrosion Control Group – Conducts basic hands‑on acceptance and in‑service testing of corrosion control equipment installed to protect buried transmission lines and related assets. (35%)
- Corrosion Control Group – Assists with restoring malfunctioning transmission and distribution equipment, performing hands‑on testing and repairs per Com Ed and corrosion mitigation standards. (20%)
