G&W Electric Co. is seeking a Power Grid Automation Engineer II to design and support advanced automation, protection, and control solutions for power distribution networks. In this role, you will engineer and configure IEDs, relays, and communication systems; develop and review protection and control schemes; and support system testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting. You will collaborate closely with manufacturing, product, and field teams to ensure safe, reliable, and standards-compliant solutions, while contributing to continuous improvement and innovation in grid reliability and efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Design and configure power grid automation and protection systems for utility and industrial customers
- Develop and review control, protection, and communication schemes for distribution networks
- Program, test, and commission IEDs, relays, RTUs, and related automation equipment
- Analyze system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement corrective actions
- Prepare engineering documentation, drawings, and technical reports
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in manufacturing, product management, and field service
- Ensure solutions comply with safety, regulatory, and utility standards
- Support customers with technical guidance, training, and post-commissioning support
- Participate in continuous improvement of engineering tools, standards, and processes
- Contribute to innovation initiatives to enhance grid reliability and efficiency
Required Skills
- Power system protection engineering
- SCADA and substation automation
- Protective relay configuration (SEL, ABB, GE or similar)
- IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus or similar protocols
- Distribution automation schemes
- Electrical system analysis (short circuit, coordination)
- PLC/RTU programming and configuration
- Reading and creating one-line and wiring diagrams
- Testing and commissioning of protection and control systems
- Technical documentation and reporting
