The role establishes policies, standards, and procedures governing all park functions—public use management, resource stewardship, education and interpretation, fiscal and human resource management, maintenance, visitor services, safety management, partnerships, public affairs, budget planning, and park development.

The site includes the former Camp Sumter prison, Andersonville National Cemetery, and the National Prisoner of War Museum, covering approximately 515 acres across federal and non‑federal lands.
