Responsibilities
Each individual performs only those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA under 493.1425, 493.1495, and 493.1463 and must possess a degree of skill commensurate with education, training, or experience.
Responsibilities include:
- Adhere to laboratory procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
- Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions when test systems deviate.
- Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct them or immediately notify supervisor, Director, or Medical Director.
- Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and any additional disciplines introduced.
- Perform and document maintenance of instruments and equipment daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed.
- Review the accuracy of patient results before release or reporting.
- Recognize age‑specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested as patient samples and maintain confidentiality of results.
- Perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients across all age groups.
- Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
- Adhere to department and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
- Act as Lead Technician in the absence of a supervisor, responsible for the section during shift.
- Perform duties related to LIS and/or POC as assigned.
- Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by department manager or director.
- ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as per CLIA §42 CFR 493.1423.
- Current and valid state license if required by the state.

Pay TransparencySaint Joseph Medical Center – Joliet offers competitive compensation. Estimated starting compensation is $35.48 per hour. Final compensation will be determined at hiring based on skill set, experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
