Responsibilities- Adhere to laboratory procedures for the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
- Follow laboratory quality control policies and document all corrective actions related to deviations from performance specifications.
- Identify problems affecting test performance and either correct them or immediately notify supervisor, director, or medical director.
- Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and any other disciplines introduced into the laboratory.
- Perform and document maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed) on instruments and equipment as appropriate.
- Review the accuracy of patient results prior to release or reporting.
- Recognize age‑specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics.
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are tested like patient samples; prohibit collaboration with other laboratories before reporting proficiency results to appropriate agencies.
- May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture on various age groups from newborn to geriatrics.
- Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
- Adhere to all departmental and hospital policies related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources.
- When a supervisor is absent, may act as Lead Technician with responsibility for the section or department during the shift.
- May be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and/or POC.
- Other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by department manager or director.
Education and Work Experience
- ASCP certification, or equivalent (preferred).
- Minimum two years of hospital laboratory work experience.
- Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological health science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements stated in CLIA.
- Current and valid state license if required in the state where the laboratory is located.
Saint Joseph Medical Center – Joliet offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package. The estimated total compensation for this role ranges from $27.72 to $40.15 per hour, including wages, benefits, and other compensation forms. Current offers will be determined at hiring time based on factors such as skillset, experience, education, credentials, and licensure.
