Medical Assistant, Surgical Tech
Job Summary
Performs a variety of duties in the Center as a member of the surgical team. Scrubs on all types of cases performed at the Center, including orthopedic, pain and local cases. Assists in preparation for cases by picking instruments and maintaining the sterile field. May also function as the surgeon’s second assistant. Assists the OR team in all aspects of room turnover and ensures soft goods and instrumentation are ready for the following day’s surgery.
EssentialFunctions
Environment and Demands:
- Indoor area with frequent exposure to mild discomfort from dust, fumes, temperature, and noise.
- Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials.
Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands:
- Prolonged periods of standing at the sterile field.
- Ability to lift and transport patients and equipment weighing 20–50 lbs.
- Customer Service
- Positive interaction with customers.
- Effective communication across cultures, values, and beliefs.
- Acknowledges customer concerns and takes corrective action.
- Complies with identified customer service behaviors.
- Provides escort to customers when necessary.
- Performance Improvement
- Participates in department/hospital‑wide improvement activities.
- Utilizes resources for self‑development and knowledge enhancement.
- Complies with licensure and/or certification requirements.
- Participates in annual competency assessment.
- Budget
- Fiscally prudent use of equipment and supplies.
- Utilizes charge process for supplies/equipment.
- Projects/Assignments
- Completes projects and assignments within projected time frames.
- Participates in committees and task forces as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned within classification.
- Assists with new hire orientation.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Professional certification:
Graduate of an accredited training program through NBSTSA. - 1–2 years of ambulatory operating room experience.
- Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and organize tasks by importance.
- Certified Surgical Technologist – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required upon hire.
- BLS – American Heart Association required upon hire.
