Job Summary

Performs a variety of duties in the Center as a member of the surgical team. Scrubs on all types of cases performed at the Center, including orthopedic, pain and local cases. Assists in preparation for cases by picking instruments and maintaining the sterile field. May also function as the surgeon’s second assistant. Assists the OR team in all aspects of room turnover and ensures soft goods and instrumentation are ready for the following day’s surgery.

Environment and Demands:

  • Indoor area with frequent exposure to mild discomfort from dust, fumes, temperature, and noise.
  • Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials.

Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of standing at the sterile field.
  • Ability to lift and transport patients and equipment weighing 20–50 lbs.
Job Specific Competencies
  • Prepares for the next day’s scheduled procedures, ensuring all supplies, soft goods, instruments, and equipment are available according to the surgeon’s preference cards.
  • Actively assists without direction in case preparation, turnover, and terminal cleaning, following AORN Recommended Practices and Center policy.
  • Assists with inventory control and informs the materials team of low par levels.
  • Performs daily stocking and re‑stocking of the OR and clean‑supply stock room.
  • Demonstrates appropriate sterile and aseptic techniques, dress, and hand scrub at the beginning and during each case.
  • Sets up and maintains the sterile field, arranging instrumentation and supplies per AORN Recommended Practices.
  • Anticipates the surgeon’s intra‑operative needs and passes instruments safely.
  • Assists the surgeon with retractors, instrument handling, and sharps counts, safeguarding patient and team safety.
  • Manages operative field components, including drapes, equipment, and personnel, to maintain sterility.
  • Assists in observing the patient for complications and provides necessary supplies.
  • Handles specimens appropriately per Center policy.
  • Assists in applying sterile dressing before drape removal.
  • Prepares contaminated instruments for transport to decontamination and re‑sterilization; applies enzymatic cleaner if necessary.
  • Handles delicate instrumentation with proper storage and care.
  • Disinfects, cleans, and prepares instruments, equipment, and supplies for sterilization.
  • Adheres to all infection control policies, including OSHA guidelines and universal precautions, using appropriate PPE.
  • Orientates new personnel, students, and program participants by demonstrating techniques.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement Program activities, data collection, and implementation of improvement plans.
  • Maintains all required certifications and performs effectively in emergencies.

    Qualifications
    • High School diploma or GED required.
    • Professional certification:
      Graduate of an accredited training program through NBSTSA.
    • 1–2 years of ambulatory operating room experience.
    • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision and organize tasks by importance.
    • Certified Surgical Technologist – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required upon hire.
    • BLS – American Heart Association required upon hire.
