The Automation Maintenance Technician will repair and calibrate our automated and robotic systems, including Symbotic’s Automated Adapters, Vertical Lifts, and fleet of automated robotic vehicles. The role requires expertise across mechanical, PLC, electrical, and electronic subsystems, as well as system upkeep and operations of automated adapters that interface with the Symbotic structure.
What we doThe Automation Maintenance Technician I is part of the Customer Operations organization, responsible for leading the day-to‑day operations of Symbotic’s robotic material handling system. This organization drives operational excellence by partnering with onsite customers to deliver quality, safety, and system performance.
What you’ll doMaintain safety commitments in compliance with OSHA, Symbotic, and customer procedures.
- Perform inspections on Automated Storage and Retrieval System components, automated robotic vehicles, and Automated Adapters/Lifts.
- Support continuous operation by adjusting, calibrating, repairing, replacing, or modifying system components.
- Process and monitor the flow of the automated storage and retrieval system, including manual inbound, automatic inbound, and automatic outbound, to maximize throughput and cases per hour.
- Troubleshoot robotic vehicle anomalies and stoppages using schematic and wiring diagrams and advanced test equipment.
- Utilize PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
- Perform periodic system inspections within expected durations on all equipment and document all actions and repairs, including parts used and labor.
- Ensure quality maintenance and documentation via the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Communicate production‑impacting problems and suggested actions, including estimated time for corrective and emergency maintenance, to relevant team members.
- Operate and run automated systems.
- Work in a dynamic environment and adjust to immediate business needs.
- Clean up equipment and remove replaced parts from work areas after repairs.
- Recover automated robotic vehicles within the Symbotic Matrix select system, including working in restrictive environments.
- Perform minor utility work (e.g., machining holes, brackets, cutting steel, aligning sensors, attaching Unistrut).
- Troubleshoot, calibrate, set up, and change tools on robotic arms.
- Execute continuous cleaning and adhere to 5S policies.
- Perform cell operator functions as needed.
- Complete other duties as assigned by leadership.
Associate degree or equivalent experience/certification in electronics, automotive, automation, manufacturing, or a related field. At least one year of experience with mechanical automation systems (or equivalent training). Strong electro‑mechanical skills and ability to maintain productivity expectations. Work independently following procedures and manuals. Multi‑task and perform multiple job functions simultaneously. Demonstrate safety commitment and maintain satisfactory attendance. Proficiency in performing all inspection functions and producing quality work with a high sense of urgency.
Literacy in written and verbal English.
Approximately 75% of the time will be spent on a construction site with required PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel toes, eyeglasses, ear protection, fall protection). Employees may need to navigate steep stairs and railings up to 45 feet high. Work will be conducted in temperatures ranging from 105° to 32° Fahrenheit. Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs and moving up to 80 lbs.
Stand and walk for up to 12 hours and perform repetitive movements. Work at heights up to 45 feet and within restrictive areas of 24 inches. Compliance with all safety requirements, including Lock‑out/Tag‑out and fall protection protocols, is mandatory.
