Student Employee, Biology/Chemistry Lab Assistant Assistant

The Biology/Chemistry lab assistant will assist with Biology/Chemistry laboratory prep by cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Position is part-time in the Natural Sciences and Physical Education department under Academic Affairs, reporting to the Biology Lab Supervisor. The classification is non-exempt with a minimum pay rate of $15.00 per hour and is FWS eligible.

Essential job duties and key responsibilities include:

  • Adhering to safety procedures and policies as detailed in the JJC Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • Preparing laboratory materials for all Biology and Chemistry courses
  • Preparing media for Microbiology Labs, including operating the autoclave and practicing aseptic techniques
  • Maintaining aquariums, plants, lab animals, and other living specimens
  • Maintaining cadavers
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, including cleaning, storage, and inventories
  • Maintaining classrooms and general lab clean-up
  • Preparing chemical solutions and observing proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials

The position requires working 10-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 am to 4:00 pm, with the possibility of working up to 28 hours per week during summer and holiday breaks with supervisor approval.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Being enrolled at JJC for 6 or more credit hours in the fall/spring semester
  • Having a GPA of 2.0 or above
  • Completing previous coursework in Biology and/or Chemistry
  • Being able to work well with others
  • Being able to communicate effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence

Preferred qualifications include:

  • English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency
  • Demonstrated multicultural competence

Physical demands include some moderate lifting. Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
