Job Description:

The Biology/Chemistry lab assistant will assist with Biology/Chemistry laboratory prep by cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment.

CLASSIFICATION:
Non-exempt

MINIMUM PAY RATE: $15.00 per hour
(Position is FWS Eligible)

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • 1. Abide by Safety Procedures & Policies as detailed in the JJC Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • 2. Prepare laboratory materials for all Biology and Chemistry courses.
  • 3. Prepare media for Microbiology Labs, including; operating the autoclave & practicing aseptic techniques.
  • 4. Maintenance of aquariums, plants, lab animals and other living specimens.
  • 5. Maintenance of cadavers.
  • 6. Maintenance of laboratory equipment & supplies, including; cleaning, storage & inventories.
  • 7. Maintenance of classrooms and general lab clean-up.
  • 8. Prepare chemical solutions. Observe proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • 9. Work 10-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am to 4:00 pm
  • 10. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1. Enrolled at JJC for 6 or more credit hours in the fall/spring semester.
  • 2. GPA of 2.0 or above.
  • 3. Complete previous coursework in Biology and/or Chemistry
  • 4. Must be able to work well with others
  • 5. Must be able to communicate effectively
  • 6. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
  • 2. Demonstrated multicultural competence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Some Moderate Lifting Required
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
Scheduled Weekly Hours

This is a student employee position that works around your class schedule. May work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. During summer and holiday breaks (Winter/Spring), may work up to 28 hours per week with supervisor approval.
