About the RoleAs a Tow Truck Technician, you will be responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and installation of tow truck equipment and trailer systems in a shop environment. This role focuses on maintaining and upfitting light-, medium-, and heavy-duty tow trucks and transport trailers to ensure they meet operational, safety, and customer requirements.
This is a hands-on technician role working across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural components of tow trucks, recovery equipment, and Cottrell and Landoll trailers. You will partner closely with the service team to complete repairs, modifications, and custom builds efficiently and to a high standard.
Note:
Prior towing industry experience is not required—we're open to candidates with strong mechanical backgrounds who are eager to learn specialized equipment.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- CDL is a plus, but not required
- 1–2 years of experience as a mechanic, service technician, or equipment repair technician (automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or similar)
- Basic knowledge of mechanical systems (electrical and hydraulic experience is a plus)
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
- Ability to read and understand repair instructions, diagrams, and equipment manuals
- Experience with fabrication tools (grinders, welders, cutting torches) or willingness to learn
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs. and perform physical tasks in a shop environment
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn specialized tow equipment systems
- Experience working on tow trucks, wreckers, rollbacks, recovery vehicles, or equipment trailers (Cottrell, Landoll, or similar)
- Welding certification or fabrication training
- Hydraulic systems experience or certification
- Automotive or diesel technician training (ASE or equivalent)
- Experience in a dealership, manufacturing, or equipment upfitting environment
- Perform inspection, diagnosis, and repair of tow truck equipment and trailer systems
- Install, troubleshoot, and repair components, including:
- Hydraulic systems (winches, booms, wheel lifts, stabilizers)
- Electrical systems (lighting, wiring, control systems)
- Mechanical and structural components (frames, decking, toolboxes, lift systems)
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair transport trailers, including Cottrell and Landoll units, ensuring proper functionality and safety compliance
- Conduct preventative maintenance and safety inspections to meet operational and regulatory standards
- Assist with fabrication, modification, and reinforcement of truck bodies and trailer components
- Diagnose equipment issues and identify worn or damaged components
- Document all work performed, including repairs, parts used, and recommended future service
- Collaborate with service advisors, parts team, and leadership to support efficient workflow
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment in accordance with company policies and OSHA standards
- Stay current on towing equipment, trailer systems, repair techniques, and safety practices
- Hands-on work with specialized and custom equipment
