Position: Graduate Assistant 9 Month

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated graduate student to join our department as a part-time Graduate Student Assistant. This position offers an opportunity to gain valuable experience in academia while supporting the department with grading assignments, assisting in research projects, and undertaking various administrative tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities

Graduate Teaching Assistants support faculty‑led instruction while contributing to the career training of the student. General duties of GTAs include assisting with course delivery, student assessment, and student learning activities, including leading discussions or laboratories, grading and providing feedback, holding office hours, and supporting course administration, while receiving supervised, mentored training designed to advance their professional development as educators and scholars.

GTAs perform duties that are directly related to instruction and the GTA’s professional development, work within defined hour limits (no more than 20 hours per week) and operate under the supervision of a faculty instructor; GTAs are typically not the instructor of record unless explicitly authorized. Typical roles for GTAs fall within the following broad categories:

  • Instructional support and direct instruction
  • Grading and student assessment
  • Student support and engagement
  • Course preparation and administration
  • Professional responsibilities related to teaching
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Strong academic background in social sciences with a focus on sociology or criminology.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Stata).
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment.
  • Prior experience in research, teaching assistance, or academic support is preferred.
General Days / Hours

This position is a part‑time, 9‑month position (August 16 – May 15) requiring 20 hours per week during regular business hours.

Regular business hours:
Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Sociology, Criminology, or a related field.
