Job Description
The Network Operations Center (NOC) is responsible for operation, maintenance, administration, and performance management of customer IP networks. The NOC serves as an escalation point for end‑user issues that cannot be resolved by field personnel or help desk technicians and acts as a first responder for network outages or impairments. The NOC ensures uptime and availability of platforms, elements, and services within the network.
The NOC operates 24x7x365, providing input to engineering teams to improve end‑user experience, NOC tools/monitoring, new network products/services, and refinement of existing products. The NOC interfaces with internal and external teams to ensure timely and accurate resolution of all reported or identified network issues.
- Analyze engineering documentation and design for acceptance into the network and subsequently take ownership of those products/services, including circuit testing using RFC‑2544, Y.1564, or Y.1731 (as needed).
- Ensure adherence to network standards, policies, and procedures such as naming standards, design methodologies, port assignment, and base configuration.
- Understand routing and switching in a service provider network, including protocols such as VLAN (C‑VLAN and S‑VLAN), MPLS, E‑VPN, ECMP, BGP, SIP, SNMP, and OSPF.
- Manage the network monitoring system (NMS), including importing new devices and ensuring proper alerting and response.
- Maintain deployed Gigabit Passive Optical Network (G‑PON), configuring the technology and its end‑user endpoints, and scheduling upgrades.
- Maintain and update network documentation following ITIL change management practices.
- Manage the ticket queue, ensuring all reported issues are documented and resolved timely.
- Monitor customer networks via the monitoring platform to verify alerts and accurately identify customer impact.
- Manage network outages, dispatching appropriate technicians, escalating to vendor or engineering support, and acting as liaison among teams.
- Perform network maintenance, including MOP writing and execution, while minimizing end‑user impact.
- Perform configuration and acceptance of network equipment for new service areas.
- Maintain critical network sparing inventory.
- Perform network troubleshooting to quickly and accurately identify root causes of outages or impairments.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
- Understanding of a multi‑node, full‑mesh network topology.
- Experience with Cisco, Juniper, Ciena, Nokia, or equivalent router/switch.
- Knowledge of routing protocols: OSPF, BGP, ISIS.
- Experience with Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (G‑PON).
- Configuration and troubleshooting of network devices via CLI.
- Knowledge of network monitoring systems.
- Understanding of Carrier‑Grade NAT (CG‑NAT).
- Knowledge of IPv4 or IPv6 and IP routing.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Understanding of layer 2 technologies.
- Experience in feature testing in labs and other environments.
- Experience with change control processes in a structured environment.
- Experience troubleshooting home/small‑business networks with end‑users.
- Experience interacting with vendors for hardware repair or replacement.
- Computer skills: MS Office, IP configuration, Putty.
- Eager to learn new technologies.
- Strong understanding of the OSI model.
- Experience with Juniper router/switch.
- Experience with DZS/Zhone G‑PON platforms.
- Experience with Mikrotik router/switch.
- Knowledge of SIP.
- Linux/Server experience.
- Experience with transport network equipment.
