Position Summary

The Executive Director of Enterprise Technology provides executive leadership for enterprise information technology projects and strategic oversight of ITS Communications Services department, including Networking and Telecommunications.

Reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), this position serves as a member of the ITS Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for leading complex, cross-functional technology initiatives that advance the University's strategic priorities while ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable network and communications infrastructure.

This position leads the planning, coordination, governance, and successful execution of enterprise technology projects across all ITS functional areas while directing the daily operations and long-term strategic planning of Communications Services. The Executive Director collaborates with ITS leadership, institutional stakeholders, executive leadership, faculty, staff, students, and external vendors to align technology initiatives with institutional goals, improve operational effectiveness, and support innovation across the University.

This role is governed by state and federal laws and institution policies.

Duties & Responsibilities Strategic Technology Project Leadership
  • Lead enterprise technology projects through the complete project lifecycle, including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, implementation, and project closeout.
  • Develop and maintain the ITS project portfolio, ensuring projects align with institutional strategic priorities, available resources, and organizational objectives.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams across all ITS units based on project scope.
  • Develop project schedules, communication plans, resource plans, budgets, implementation strategies, and executive reporting.
  • Coordinate with technology vendors and third-party partners to ensure successful project implementation and contract compliance
Communications Services Leadership
  • Provide executive leadership and operational oversight for the Communications Services department, including Networking and Telecommunications.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, maintenance, monitoring, security, and lifecycle management of the University's wired, wireless, and network infrastructure.
  • Develop strategic roadmaps for networking and communications technologies that support academic, administrative, research, and online learning initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of IT Security to ensure network architecture supports institutional cybersecurity objectives and industry best practices.
  • Lead network modernization initiatives, including wireless expansion, cloud connectivity, network segmentation, redundancy, and emerging communications technologies.
  • Oversee telecommunications systems, Internet service providers, vendor relationships, maintenance agreements, procurement activities, and technology contracts related to Communications Services.
  • Monitor operational performance, capacity planning, business continuity, and disaster recovery initiatives related to networking and telecommunications.
Leadership and Administration
  • Serve as a member of the ITS Senior Leadership Team and contribute to departmental strategic planning, budgeting, policy development, and operational decision-making.
  • Partner with ITS directors and institutional leadership to develop and execute strategic technology initiatives that support the University's mission.
  • Promote collaboration across ITS functional areas while ensuring alignment of technology initiatives and operational priorities.
  • Maintain awareness of applicable regulatory and compliance requirements including FERPA, GLBA, PCI-DSS, CJIS, HIPAA (where applicable), and institutional information security policies.
  • Represent ITS on University committees, planning groups, and vendor meetings as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of enterprise project management principles, methodologies, and best practices, including Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid project delivery models.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise networking technologies, including wired and wireless networking, routing, switching, network architecture, Internet connectivity, telecommunications systems, cloud networking, and related infrastructure technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple complex enterprise technology projects simultaneously while balancing organizational priorities and available resources.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to mentor, motivate, and develop technical professionals.
