Position Summary

The Literacy Coach serves as a school‑based instructional leader, focusing on improving students’ literacy achievement throughout the academic program using evidence‑based instructional coaching, professional learning, and data‑informed support for teachers. The role builds teacher capacity and strengthens the implementation of high‑quality Tier I literacy instruction aligned to the district curriculum, state standards, and the Science of Reading. The position is grant‑funded and reports to the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning (Academic Implementation).

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development and oversight of the implementation of structured literacy and instructional strategies grounded in the Science of Reading, using high‑quality instructional materials to meet every student’s needs.
  • Provide modeling, collaborative planning support, and side‑by‑side coaching to improve student outcomes and support the District’s Unified Literacy Plan and academic goals.
  • Design and facilitate effective professional learning opportunities, ensuring equitable access to grade‑level curriculum for English Learners and students reading below grade level.
  • Collaborate with teachers to track, maintain, and analyze school‑wide literacy data, guide evidence‑based instructional practices, and use data to create small intervention groups.
  • Provide constructive, non‑evaluative feedback during informal observations to engage teachers in reflective and analytical thinking.
  • Monitor implementation of the standards‑based curriculum and science‑based instructional strategies, guiding use of high‑quality materials and lesson plans.
  • Research and provide content knowledge and resources on effective instructional practices.
  • Collaborate with the site‑based administrative team to align teacher skill development with changing student‑learning needs, and participate in district‑level professional learning sessions.
  • Meet and plan with school administration to formulate, implement, and assess school achievement plans, identifying areas of growth and challenges related to literacy success.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned under Georgia’s Early Literacy Act (HB 1139).
Key Requirements
  • Master’s degree in education (or related field).
  • At least five years of teaching experience, including elementary level, and experience delivering professional learning.
  • Experience in literacy intervention, dyslexia intervention, and knowledge of Science of Reading research.
  • Demonstrated mentoring and informal leadership improving teacher instructional skills.
  • Effective facilitation of professional learning for teacher groups.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid Georgia Certificate Level 5 or higher, Reading endorsement required; willing to obtain a Georgia Literacy Coaching Endorsement within the first two years.
  • Analytical decision‑making and independent judgment in reviewing and approving major recommendations.
  • Interpersonal skills for regular, frequent contact with internal personnel and district officials.
Working Conditions

Normal office setting with occasional off‑site training and district meetings; light duty (sitting at a desk, intermittent standing, stooping). Light lifting or carrying ≤25 lb.
