Job Description

The Executive Director – Elementary Academics (Design) provides executive-level leadership in the design, alignment, and continuous improvement of the district’s elementary instructional system to ensure all students have access to rigorous, standards‑aligned, and equitable learning experiences. This position operationalizes the instructional vision established by the District and Chief Academic Officer of Design by leading the development and implementation of coherent curriculum frameworks, instructional models, assessment systems, intervention structures, and professional learning across all elementary grade levels and content areas.

The Executive Director – Elementary Academics (Design) supervises elementary curriculum/content coordinators and program leaders to ensure alignment, fidelity, and consistency in the execution of district instructional expectations. In collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer – Design, this role ensures systemwide coherence across curriculum, instruction, assessment, and educator development, while advancing the district’s strategic priorities for student achievement and instructional excellence. The Executive Director – Elementary Academics (Design) also serves as a liaison and spokesperson for elementary academic initiatives, attends Board meetings and work sessions as required, and communicates academic program information to stakeholders and community partners.

This position reports to the Chief Academic Officer – Design.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership, in collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer – Design, for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of district curriculum frameworks, instructional models, and rigorous, standards‑aligned resources.
  • Lead and support content coordinators and program leaders in the design, organization, and accessibility of curriculum resources, instructional materials, assessments, intervention supports, and professional learning systems to ensure coherence across all elementary schools.
  • Ensure the development of instructional practices that support high levels of teaching and learning across the district; oversee the design of instructional frameworks, curriculum resources, and intervention systems that provide equitable access and academic support for all learners.
  • Develop implementation and fidelity‑monitoring tools to assess alignment with district instructional priorities, academic expectations, and evidence‑based instructional practices.
  • Supervise, direct, and evaluate curriculum and instructional staff, ensuring effective implementation of district instructional priorities and monitoring staff performance.
  • Lead and manage the planning, coordination, and design of large‑scale, cross‑departmental academic projects aligned to district goals.
  • Ensure alignment and coherence across curriculum, instruction, assessment, intervention systems, and professional learning, eliminating fragmentation through cross‑content and cross‑program collaboration.
  • Support vertical and horizontal alignment of standards, instructional priorities, and student learning experiences across grade levels and programs.
  • Oversee the design of high‑quality professional learning aligned to district instructional priorities and monitor its effectiveness and impact.
  • Support the development of instructional leadership capacity among curriculum coordinators, coaches, and teacher leaders through coaching, collaboration, and structured professional growth systems.
  • Oversee the development and refinement of common assessments, progress‑monitoring tools, and instructional data systems in collaboration with district assessment and accountability teams.
  • Use student achievement and subgroup performance data to identify instructional gaps and inform curriculum and program improvements.
  • Direct the review, vetting, and approval of curriculum resources, instructional materials, and academic programs to ensure alignment with district priorities, standards, and instructional frameworks.
