General Purpose

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall leadership, direction, and management of nursing services within the skilled nursing facility. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, resident-centered care while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. The DON provides clinical and administrative leadership, oversees nursing staff performance, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote resident safety, satisfaction, and positive clinical outcomes.

As a key member of the facility leadership team, the DON plays a critical role in operational performance, quality improvement, and regulatory readiness.

Responsibilities Leadership & Staff Management
  • Direct, coordinate, and oversee nursing staff to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate resident care.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate nursing personnel, including RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.
  • Develop and manage nursing staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage for all shifts and census levels.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities for nursing team members.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, in-service training, and competency assessments.
  • Foster a positive work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and staff retention.
Clinical Oversight
  • Ensure accurate assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of resident care in accordance with clinical standards and best practices.
  • Monitor clinical practices, outcomes, and documentation to ensure quality care and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapy services, social services, dietary, and other interdisciplinary team members to support comprehensive, resident-centered care.
  • Respond promptly and compassionately to resident, family, and staff concerns, complaints, or clinical issues.
  • Oversee medication management practices, treatments, and nursing interventions.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including CMS, state health department, and OSHA requirements.
  • Oversee infection prevention and control programs, including surveillance, education, and corrective actions.
  • Lead preparation for state surveys, audits, and inspections; develop and implement plans of correction as needed.
  • Monitor quality indicators, incident reports, audits, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation related to nursing services, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Participate in budget development and manage nursing department expenses responsibly.
  • Monitor staffing levels, overtime usage, and agency staffing to maintain efficiency and quality of care.
  • Develop, implement, and update nursing policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
  • Ensure proper orientation and ongoing education of nursing staff.
  • Provide regular reports to the Administrator regarding nursing operations, staffing, clinical outcomes, and quality initiatives.
  • Participate in facility leadership meetings and strategic planning efforts.
Qualifications
  • Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required;
    Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of nursing leadership experience in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting.
  • Strong knowledge of CMS regulations, state survey processes, and long‑term care compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and team‑building skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced healthcare environment.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and clinical documentation systems.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required to perform the essential functions of this position.
