POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, maintains and repairs a variety of automotive equipment, primarily school buses, automobiles, and related mechanical equipment. Performs inspections, repairs and preventive maintenance on Clayton County Public School buses. Supports Maintenance Supervisor by providing leadership and job training in the daily operations of the Maintenance shop.
This position reports to the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs complex mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment.
- Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions using computer diagnostic equipment and determines needed repairs or replacements.
- Tests equipment and evaluates component failure; inspects, evaluates, maintains, and repairs all related vehicles and equipment.
- Provides technical assistance and job training to Maintenance Mechanics as needed and coordinates with other departments and the Supervisor to complete job assignments.
- Performs proper check‑out procedures to trace and locate defects and determines level of repair needed.
- Repairs and replaces starters, generators, distributors, relays, and other automotive electrical equipment.
- Makes emergency repairs to equipment in the field and makes proper recommendations to the shop supervisor for repair.
- Maintains and repairs heavy equipment (e.g., buses, forklifts) and is responsible for all materials, parts, tools, and equipment assigned.
- All other duties, as assigned, to perform the above services.
KEY
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma or GED certificate required; vocational training in the field required.
- Minimum of five (5) years automotive or maintenance experience.
- Must be computer literate and apply technology concepts to improve department effectiveness.
- Valid GA Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) of class
B. - Provides training and guidance to Maintenance personnel as needed.
- Responsible for the welfare of others, exercising duty of care and protection of health, safety, security, well‑being, and best interests of district stakeholders.
- Work environment:
Maintenance shop and emergency calls; potential hazards include exposure to electricity and chemicals, and wide range of temperatures. - Must be able to wear appropriate safety equipment and lift fifty (50) pounds frequently and one (100) pounds occasionally.
- Walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, bending, crouching, and reaching in all directions for up to eight (8) hours per day.
NOTE:
This is a Grade 24, 225‑day position with a salary range of $50,574 - $55,119. Final salary placement within this range is determined based on individual credentials, years of relevant experience, and the guidelines outlined in the CCPS Compensation Handbook.
