EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I - TRANSPORTATION AND DEVELOPMENT
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATIONDrives and operates equipment in support of Transportation and Development maintenance and construction projects. Loads and unloads materials at work sites. Operates equipment and vehicles for assigned project tasks. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level operator, foreman, or supervisor who closely monitors and inspects work while in progress and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Drives and operates a variety of trucks and equipment for the purpose of constructing, maintaining, and repairing roads, curbs, and sidewalks within the County rights-of-way or easements. Conducts pre‑trip inspections; fuels trucks; loads and secures materials on trucks; spreads materials; and conducts post‑trip inspections.
- Operates tractors with mounted equipment such as a mower or broom, rollers, pavers, bobcats, and other motorized equipment.
- Operates small or light equipment such as chainsaws, jack hammers, hand and power tools. Cuts trees, brush, and grass within County rights‑of‑way; picks up litter and debris from roads and rights‑of‑way; cleans ditches and drains; picks up leaves.
- Flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public.
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor operator repairs on tools, equipment, and vehicles.
- May require the use of hand tools including rakes, shovels, posthole diggers, brooms, chippers, etc.
- May require operation of dump trucks to transport materials to and from the worksites.
- Participates as needed in efforts related to inclement weather conditions, natural disasters, and other emergency situations.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- High School Diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years of experience operating and driving equipment in support of maintenance projects; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
- Preferred:
Georgia Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and certification as a Flagman.
Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTSSome tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORSPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, or traffic hazards.
