Position SummaryThe College of Arts & Sciences is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a commitment to liberal arts education to provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students. The largest undergraduate program at Washington University, the College of Arts & Sciences contains approximately 4,700 degree seeking undergraduate students. Student Academic Affairs, housed within the College Office, comprises five central functional areas: four-year advising and the first-year experience;
student progress and academic success; academic policies and administration; post-graduate and pre-professional planning; and pre-health advising and programs. The academic advisor will contribute to advising and programmatic initiatives with a particular focus on the work of one of these functional areas, assist in the execution of programs and events that enhance the academic mission of the College of Arts & Sciences, and guide students on their academic path from their first year through graduation.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as a four-year academic advisor for approximately 45 undergraduate students in each class (180 advisees).
- Provide academic advising to support student retention and graduation initiatives.
- Interpret and explain university policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, staff, and administration.
- Identify and help resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students.
- Analyze students’ academic and personal issues or concerns and provide referral or intervention services.
- Support students in developing a required academic plan to meet graduation requirements.
- Coordinate mentoring or specific programming for students within various academic programs.
- Guide students through college and university level administrative processes.
- Liaise with Arts & Sciences departments and programs to ensure a holistic student academic experience.
- Work with campus partners to ensure holistic support and tracking of student progress.
- Maintain appropriate student records and documents student interactions.
- Participate, as needed, in specialty advising (e.g., pre-health advising, fellowship and scholarship advising, and progress counseling).
- Assist in the coordination and execution of assigned program(s).
- Assist in the coordination, execution, and maintenance of assigned program(s) at the direction of the program manager or functional lead.
- Serve as a project contact person.
- Assist in the production of a variety of documents, reports, proposals or literature.
- Execute daily tasks and track progress of program.
- Collaborate in the design of program goals, including development and implementation.
- May provide guidance or direction to student workers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Support the College Office with additional programming and mission critical priorities.
