Early Career Substation Drafter – Overland Park, Kansas (Joplin, MO considered)
WSP is seeking an Early Career Substation Drafter to support the Power Delivery and Energy Substation Team on projects in Overland Park, Kansas, with potential assignment to Joplin, Missouri.
OpportunityThe successful candidate will be responsible for learning and applying CAD knowledge, client standards, and WSP’s design processes. They will collaborate on design issues and seek guidance from experienced team members.
Your Impact- Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing site data and technical drawings.
- Draft and design substation projects including physical, civil, schematic, and wiring diagrams.
- Use 3D CAD software to prepare precise design details and drawings.
- Support technical design, ensuring adherence to dimensioning, tolerance, and construction standards.
- Assist in verifying calculations, design changes, and contract interpretations.
- Work with cross‑functional teams and adhere to city, state, and federal regulations.
- Prepare multiple design versions for engineering review.
- Ensure compliance with contract requirements and maintain documentation.
- Collaborate with engineer‑in‑charge on project phases and tasks.
- Complete assigned training and demonstrate ongoing learning.
- Apply ethical decision‑making and respect WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required.
- High School Diploma.
- 0–1 year(s) of relevant post‑education experience with drafting and design support.
- Associate’s or technical degree in an accredited drafting program, or equivalent industry experience.
- Strong command of English with good written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, and processes.
- Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Self‑leadership, attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, handle multiple tasks, and comply with company policies.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑discrimination policies.
- Availability to work schedules beyond the typical workweek, as project requirements demand.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.
- Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
- Professional licensure or certification as required.
- 1+ year drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or Micro Station, preferably in an engineering environment.
- Experience with Autodesk Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes.
- Ability to interpret substation electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and substation physical/civil drawings.
- Experience working with scaled drawings and survey coordinate systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience with Project Wise File Management System.
- Reliable and detail‑oriented self‑starter who takes ownership of assigned tasks.
- Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
