Successful candidates will be able to implement and evaluate student health services at assigned schools. Nurses are expected to support the educational mission of the Joplin School District by promoting optimal health and learning in all students. They assist medically fragile students and students with special healthcare needs to integrate safely and successfully into the school environment.

  • Maintain accurate records and filing systems for accountability and audit purposes as required by law and Board policy.
  • Solve practical problems utilizing math functions as needed to complete job duties.
  • Read and interpret documents such as work orders, safety rules, and handbooks and apply to job duties.
Essential Functions
  • Maintain a complete and up-to-date health record system using available technology.
  • Plan and conduct screenings, examinations, and health appraisals in accordance with State Law and District Policy.
  • Monitor newly enrolled students to ensure State Law and District Policy are implemented.
  • Advise students, staff, and parents on appropriate and concerning health issues.
  • Make referrals to school resources and to the community.
  • Serve as consultant and resource person in health instruction and curriculum planning.
  • Provide input to the Administration concerning State Law and development of District Policies related to health issues.
  • Provide first aid as needed.
  • Assist emergency caregivers as applicable.
  • Maintain appropriate records.
  • Refer students with suspected disabilities to District Specialists.
  • Make recommendations to the Principal regarding health and safety.
  • Administer medication.
  • Maintain professional competence by doing professional reading and attending appropriate workshops.
  • Assist in providing training for District Staff concerning health-related issues.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians.
  • Cooperate and share professionally with members of district staff.
  • Keep staff informed about relevant health issues.
  • Communicate with various health-related organizations in the community.
  • Carry out all other duties as assigned.
