Missouri Baptist Medical Center, an acute care hospital in St. Louis County, offers a full continuum of medical and surgical services, including heart care, cancer, women and infants, breast health, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, stroke, therapy, wound and pain management services. The hospital has a 24‑hour adult emergency department and cares for pediatric patients at a separate emergency department in collaboration with St.

Louis Children's Hospital.

The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Missouri Baptist Medical Center is a 16‑bed inpatient unit that cares for post‑operative cardiovascular and thoracic surgical patients after they no longer require intensive cardiovascular monitoring.

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

• Promotes patient and family‑centered care in a healing environment.
• Educates patients and families on illness or injury management, post‑treatment home care needs, and medication administration.
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
• Participates in professional development.
• Develops, implements, and documents individualized plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other interprofessional team members and the patient, family, or caregiver.
• Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
• Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care.
• Assesses patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population‑specific needs.
• Maintains a constant state of alertness; BJC has determined this is a safety‑sensitive position.
