Overview
Perioperative nursing is a specialty within the nursing profession that encompasses the care of individuals across the life span who are undergoing a surgical procedure or procedure requiring anesthesia. The Perioperative nurse uses a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to patient care, including pre‑procedure care, intraoperative and acute post‑operative care. The role involves strict adherence to surgical safety checklists, sterility, surgical counts, and post‑operative airway, pain, and nausea management.
The nurse also educates patients about post‑operative care management and provides same‑day discharge instructions.
- Collect pertinent data and information relative to the patient, situation, or setting.
- Analyze assessment data to determine actual or potential problems and issues.
- Identify expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or situation.
- Develop a collaborative plan encompassing strategies to achieve expected outcomes.
- Implement identified plan through coordination of care and employ strategies to promote health and wellness.
- Evaluate progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes.
- Assess and provide appropriate interventions for airway, pain, and nausea management.
- Educate patients on post‑operative discharge instructions.
- Deliver professional nursing care guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring.
- Promote a mutually respectful environment and practice diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
- Mentor new nurses and support students.
- Commit to lifelong learning through critical thinking and self‑reflection.
- Comply with all policies, standards, mandatory training, and Stormont Vail Health requirements.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent.
- Registered Nurse license (KSBN) or a multistate license allowing practice in Kansas.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; RQI, CPR, or ACLS may be required within 90 days of hire.
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to patient rights; proficiency in safety, legal, psychomotor skills, effective communication, and mathematical calculations related to medication and equipment.
- Ability to perform mathematical concepts such as probability, statistics, geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
This position is patient facing and requires on‑site presence; remote work is not allowed.
