This expert, patient‑focused team helps care for healthy term newborns, mother‑baby couples, high‑risk antepartum, and gynecology patients by providing support and comfort throughout their stay. The Labor and Delivery team assists the birthing person at every step of labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum. The Birthplace is equipped with electronic fetal monitoring and a central display for continuous observation. An operating suite for cesarean sections is located nearby.
Through a fast‑paced, compassionate environment, we strive to make each birth a special experience for families who have been preparing for months.
- Collect pertinent data and information related to the patient, situation, or setting.
- Analyze assessment data to identify actual or potential problems and issues.
- Identify expected outcomes for a patient‑specific plan.
- Develop a collaborative plan with strategies to achieve expected outcomes.
- Implement the planned coordination of care and employ strategies to promote health and wellness.
- Evaluate progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes.
- Deliver professional nursing care guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, creating caring relationships and honoring unconditional acceptance and respect.
- Promote a mutually respectful environment, encouraging idea exchange, professional relationship effectiveness, and ethical integration in all practice aspects.
- Advocate in all roles and settings.
- Practice Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles by respecting others’ uniqueness, perspectives, backgrounds, or beliefs.
- Communicate effectively in all areas of professional practice.
- Mentor new nurses to ensure successful orientation, competence, and emotional support.
- Support students to enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities.

- Participate and lead nursing practice in process evolution within the Stormont Vail Health professional practice model.
- Utilize appropriate resources to plan, provide, and sustain evidence‑based nursing services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible.
- Comply with all policies, standards, mandatory training, and the Stormont Vail Health requirements.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree or Bachelor of Science:
Nursing (BSN). - Registered Nurse license – KSBN. A multistate license acceptable if practice within Kansas is possible.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire. RQI, CPR, or ACLS certifications may be required depending on department.
- Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to the rights of patient or significant other (required).
- Demonstrates awareness and application of safety issues within the institution (required).
- Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and departmental functioning; manages situations to minimize risk (required).
- Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills (required).
- Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, non‑verbal, and written methods (required).
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medication administration and equipment calibration.
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
Balancing: occasionally 1–3 hours;
Carrying: occasionally 1–3 hours;
Lifting up to 50 lbs frequently;
Frequent eye/hand/foot coordination, feeling, grasping, handling, and moving;
Standing frequently;
Repetitive motions occasionally;
Walking and standing frequently;
Risks include needle stick (frequently), noise/sounds (frequently), and exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, hazardous drugs, and mechanical hazards (occasionally).
