Hall Monitor-Junction City High School

Purpose Statement

The job of Hall Monitor is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for ensuring the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non‑classroom activities; minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents; and communicating observations and/or incidents that have a potential impact on the general well‑being of students, school personnel, and/or visitors.

This job reports to Building Administrator.

Essential Functions
  • Assist a variety of people (e.g. school personnel, visitors, etc.) for providing information and assisting appropriate personnel for the safety and security of the site.
  • Collaborate with internal and external parties (e.g. school personnel, police, first responders, etc.) for ensuring that current safety protocols are understood and acted upon.
  • Communicate safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
  • Escort students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for providing direction, ensuring their safety and providing site security.
  • Intervene in potential conflicts and emergency situations for minimizing disruptions of campus activities and/or injury to involved parties.
  • Monitor student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g. general campus, halls, etc.) for ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc. for conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Prepare written materials (e.g. incident reports, activity logs, etc.) for documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Refer incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to appropriate site personnel for ensuring follow‑up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
  • Respond to inquiries from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
  • Respond to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  • Supervise school corridors, locker rooms, restrooms, assembly and athletic facilities, gymnasiums, bus loading areas, and other campus locations for observing student behavior and preventing violations and/or unsafe activities.
  • Supervise student behavior before and/or after school and during and between assigned periods (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, library, cafeteria, etc.) for ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.
Other Functions
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single tasks using existing skills. Specific skill‑based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include modeling appropriate behavior; adhering to safety practices and procedures; customer service; enforcing rules and regulations; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using pertinent software applications.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge‑based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include standards of courtesy and behavior expected of students; record keeping; safety practices and procedures; and principles of customer service and conflict resolution
