Job Title: Controller (Director of Accounting)
Location: Juneau, AK (Onsite)
Salary: $145k + Benefit (Negotiable)
Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller (Director of Accounting) is responsible for leading the organization's accounting and finance operations. This role oversees financial controls, reporting, budgeting, internal controls, compliance, and the daily operations of the Finance Department. The Controller ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards, and all applicable federal and state regulations while providing strategic financial support to executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Finance and Accounting Department, providing guidance and supervision to accounting staff.
- Develop, implement, and maintain financial controls, accounting policies, and internal control procedures.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB standards, and applicable federal, state, and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee fund accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Monitor organizational financial performance and recommend process improvements.
- Support audits and coordinate with internal and external auditors.
- Partner with the CFO on strategic financial planning, budgeting, and operational initiatives.
- Ensure the integrity of financial systems and accounting operations.
- Drive continuous improvements in financial processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- MBA or Master's degree is highly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of progressive professional finance or accounting experience.
- At least 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience managing accounting and finance teams.
- Strong experience with financial controls, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
- Hands-on experience with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and fund accounting.
- Experience supporting complex financial operations within healthcare organizations, hospitals, or integrated health systems is preferred.
Preferred Certifications
- HFMA (Healthcare Financial Management Association) Certification is highly preferred.
