What you will be doing:
As an Accounting Technician, you will provide financial and accounting support to the Department of Health by:
- Using GAAP and the State of Alaska Administrative Manual in daily work
- Working with teams across the department to follow our internal policies
- Keeping transactions accurate and on schedule
- Staying up to date and compliant with the State of Alaska's accounting systems

Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies in addition to the minimum qualifications listed below:
- Accounting:
Knowledge of traditional accounting practices including accrual, obligations, and cost methods. - Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving:
Uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary. - Cost Accounting:
Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and methods of cost accounting, including the use of historical cost, market value, or present value to measure cost; methods for assigning cost to accounting periods; and cost allocation, cost accrual, depreciation, and unit cost. - Oral Communication:
Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens effectively; clarifies information as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Two years of technical level accounting or bookkeeping experience, of which at least one year was at the full-proficiency level.
- Substitutions:
Certification as an Accounting Technician from an accredited college will substitute for one year of the required experience at the non-full-proficiency level. - Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for up to one year of the required experience at the non-full-proficiency level (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours in Accounting.
- Post secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required two years of experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) if it includes at least 9 semester/12 quarter hours at or above the 200 level in Accounting.
- An associate's degree in Accounting or Business Administration from an accredited college will substitute for the required two years of experience if it includes at least 6 semester/8 quarter hours at or above the 200 level in Accounting.
