Position Overview
Assistant Library Technician – part‑time front‑desk support at Juneau Public Libraries. The role provides a welcoming environment for patrons, assists with circulation and reference duties, and supports library operations during weekdays and weekends.
Key Responsibilities- Work the front desk, usually with a work partner, and monitor library activity during shifts.
- Assist patrons in locating materials, using library equipment, and accessing the library catalog and electronic resources.
- Handle circulation tasks such as checking out items, processing returns, and collecting overdue fees.
- Register voters and perform other public service duties.
- Perform administrative tasks, including filing, documentation, and closing responsibilities.
- Enforce library rules, exercise independent judgment in handling misconduct, and address situations involving substance abuse or mental health concerns.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Six (6) months of customer service experience that includes computer or database use.
- Valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
- Reliable transportation to all library branches.
- Experience with children or specific populations (highly desired but not required).
- Post‑secondary education in any discipline may substitute for experience at a rate of 2.67 semester hours per month.
Three library locations:
Downtown Juneau, Mendenhall Valley, and Douglas.
Typical schedule:
weekday evenings (5:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.) and weekend afternoons (12:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.). All‑staff meetings held the second Wednesday of each month, 8:00 a.m.–9:00 a.m.
