Normal Work Hours and Days: A normal work day consists of 10-12 hours, possibly longer depending on workload. Hours and start time will vary. Night shift work required as needed.

Summary

The construction laborer performs tasks involving physical labor at heavy construction projects. The position operates a variety of hand and power tools; cleans and prepares sites; digs trenches; sets braces to support excavations; erects scaffolding; cleans up rubble and debris; and removes waste materials. The position may assist other craft workers.

Essential Functions
  • Performs tasks involving strenuous manual labor in mining and heavy construction projects
  • Operates light machinery, equipment, and hand tools safely and efficiently
  • Operates basic hand tools such as saws, shovels, and rakes
  • Operates basic power tools such as plate compactors and cement mixers
  • Maintains a clean job site and secures tools and equipment daily to reduce hazards
  • Provides manual labor assistance on various tasks
  • Uses hand-held mobile radios to coordinate tasks and resources
  • Follows company and customer policies and procedures
  • Adheres to safe work practices and procedures
  • Identifies hazardous conditions on the job site
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Disposes of garbage according to set policies and procedures
  • Reports any damage immediately to supervisor

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum: A valid driver license
  • 6 months of prior experience as a laborer on remote construction
  • Preferred:
    High School Diploma or GED
  • Three or more years of experience as a laborer on remote construction
  • MSHA certification
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe operation of basic hand and power tools
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and related procedures
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor
  • Ability to communicate in writing and verbally
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to follow safety and incident reporting procedures
  • Ability to meet project schedules with dependability
  • Ability to wear protective clothing
Physical Demands

Frequency of activities is described as Not Present, Rare, Occasional, Frequent, or Constant as follows:
Sitting, Standing, Walking, Reaching, Bending/Stooping, Handling, Crouching, Fingering, Kneeling, Feeling, Climbing, Hearing, Twisting, Lifting, Carrying, Pushing/Pulling with varying levels per activity. Lifting up to 50-100 lbs and related carrying/pushing/pulling requirements are noted.

Working Conditions

Environmental Conditions:

Exposure to inclement weather, extreme cold/heat, wet/humid conditions, rain/snow/ice on location; frequent noise from equipment; occasional vibration; possible diesel fumes.

Inherent Hazards:
Moving mechanical parts, electric shock, high places, radiant energy, explosives, toxic or caustic chemicals; other risks present.
