Job SummaryUnder the direct supervision and close and frequent proximity of a certified teacher performs instructional support services. The tutor advisor should be prepared to work with students in need of academic intervention.
Responsibilities- Provide one‑on‑one tutoring when a student would not receive instruction from a teacher.
- Assist with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials, and compile accurate student records on attendance, testing results, and progress.
- Provide information, materials, and instructional support to classroom instructors.
- Conduct parent‑involvement activities, including contacting parents/legal guardians by telephone, in writing, and/or home visits to encourage participation; coordinate parent/family school functions and attend meetings and conferences to facilitate communication.
- Provide support in a library or media center.
- Provide instructional support services under the direct supervision of a teacher.
- Prepare items for program newsletters, school announcements, bulletins, and assist in organizing special events or guest speakers.
- Conduct progress‑monitoring assessments and maintain accurate databases.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Conduct initial multiple assessments to determine bilingual eligibility; conduct yearly assessments for English language acquisition and adequate yearly progress.
- Serve as a recruiter, compile surveys, initiate contact with eligible students/parents and complete initial Certificate of Eligibility.
Knowledge: Completed two years (48 semester credits) of study at a higher education institution; or an associate’s degree or meeting rigorous standards, plus formal assessment demonstrating ability to instruct reading, writing, and mathematics (or readiness). Placement knowledge of bilingual assessment methods is beneficial.
Skills: Maintain effective communication with students and staff; function as a team member; evaluate student achievement post‑lesson; keep accurate records; demonstrate instructional technology skills; experience working with diverse children.
Licensing requirements: Same as Knowledge requirement above.
Physical RequirementsExert up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, or negligible force constantly to move objects. Classified as Light Work.
Qualifications- High school diploma or GED, AND
- Two years of college (at least 48 semester hour credits), OR
- Associate’s (or higher) degree, OR
- Pass the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist.
