What

you will be doing:

Under the general direction of the Education Administrator 2, the incumbent provides state‑level leadership to school districts in the administration of federal and state education programs, specifically Title II‑A Supporting Effective Instruction and the McKinney‑Vento Homeless Education program under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Responsibilities encompass the full scope of program administration, including reviewing, approving, and monitoring Title II‑A and McKinney‑Vento programs. The incumbent manages grants from initial application approval through project review and close‑out, approves budgets, and delivers technical assistance to ensure district staff understand federal grant requirements. Responsibilities also include conducting on‑site and virtual monitoring, preparing recommendations and responses, communicating findings to grantees, and ensuring accountability and program success through follow‑up actions.

As part of the ESEA Federal Programs team, the incumbent contributes to the development and refinement of procedures and policies by drafting and revising forms, requests for proposals, federal reports, and other administrative tools. The position also supports implementation of activities outlined in the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development’s (DEED) ESSA State Plan and other key DEED initiatives.

Our organization, mission, and culture:

DEED is dedicated to delivering information, resources, and leadership to schools, districts, parents, and the public to ensure every student receives an excellent education, every day. DEED staff are engaged in meaningful professional work that supports Alaska’s greatest resource – its children.

The benefits of joining our team:

This position is part of a collaborative, close‑knit team that values service, strong working relationships, and teamwork. Our process‑driven approach ensures consistency across all team members, while also offering opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

The role is eligible for telework for candidates who meet established qualifications; however, occasional in‑person attendance may be required. Candidates teleworking from a location different than the assigned duty station may be responsible for their own travel costs when on‑site presence is necessary.

For those who choose to work on‑site, the office is centrally located with ample parking and convenient access to nearby restaurants and coffee shops.

The working environment you can expect:

DEED’s offices are conveniently located in the State Office Building in downtown Juneau and the Atwood Building in Anchorage. This position involves daily interaction with a wide range of stakeholders, including school district central office staff, superintendents, principals, teachers, contractors, and DEED colleagues. Communication occurs through phone, email, in‑person meetings, and the preparation and delivery of written and oral technical assistance documents and presentations.
