Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools are a school‑based service delivery model that provides a comprehensive set of services to the school communities we serve. IRCO’s SUN Community Schools offer a variety of programs that support students’ education and family stability. The Early Kindergarten Transition (EKT) Program is part of Kindergarten Counts, a community‑wide campaign in Multnomah County that brings together early childhood and school partners to promote successful kindergarten transitions for children and their families in SUN Community Schools.
PositionSummary
EKT Parent Educators work with the SUN Site Manager, the EKT classroom teacher, and the Prenatal to 3rd Grade Coordinator to facilitate and run the EKT Parent Education Classes during the summer. They work directly under the SUN Site Manager, plan curriculum in collaboration with the SUN Site Manager, lead parent classes, provide access to resources, facilitate presentations from community partners, give tours of the school, and work with the EKT Classroom Teacher to plan opportunities for parents to visit the EKT classroom.
Programs are in‑person, located at school sites around SE Portland.
- Follow all school district and IRCO safety protocols related to working with adults in school communities.
- Treat parents, youth and fellow staff respectfully while executing classroom management and adhering to school rules.
- Create, develop, and implement a community‑aware approach in curriculum and activities for adult classes.
- Record and report accurate attendance to SUN Manager, collect adult registration forms for all program participants.
- Provide culturally responsive communication, outreach, and engagement with students and families.
- Communicate effectively with SUN Site Manager and parents about parent concerns or questions.
- Support at school family nights, special events, and grade promotion events as needed.
- Be a consistent and reliable staff member during the entire session of summer programming (2‑3 weeks total).
- Effectively communicate work availability and absences in advance, when possible.
- Attend all SUN staff meetings and session orientations.
- Effectively work with individuals with a broad range of lived experiences.
- Understand the role of “mandatory reporter” and communicate any concerns related to student safety to the SUN Manager in a timely manner.
- Develop culturally responsive and respectful relationships with students, their families, and all community members served.
- Use good judgment when working with families in a school setting.
- Work in or deliver services in a school setting.
- Actively work to disrupt illegal or unlawful treatment based on race and systematic unfair denial of fair treatment through a respectful and engaging program practice and implementation.
- Utilize bilingual skills to support community‑aware communication to students, families, and clients in their preferred language when possible.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
- High School diploma or equivalent is preferred; experience in the field may be considered as equivalent.
