Ameri Corps Slot Classification: 1200 hours - the minimum number of hours the selected candidate must serve throughout the duration of their position.

This Education Assistant is an Ameri Corps position that will contribute to fulfilling science outreach objectives for Denali National Park and Preserve. Denali serves 600,000 in-person visitors and countless virtual visitors each year. The participant will help the Denali education, interpretation, media, and research teams share park science in engaging and digestible ways.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIESDenali National Park and Preserve seeks a Science Communication SIP to create inspiring, digestable, and interactive materials that engage visitors with current park science and stewardship messages. The candidate will also help instruct indoor and outdoor education programs for youth and assist with visitor center services. The ideal candidate is skilled at and passionate about engaging the public—particularly youth—with science and land stewardship, both in‑person and virtually.
DELIVERABLESThe participant will complete one or more science communication projects and assist with instructing youth programs. The projects for the position will be selected based on the selected candidate’s aptitudes and interests. They may include creating and updating exhibits, formatting science reports, developing Junior Ranger activities and materials, writing content for Denali’s website, documenting research and education events with photography and videography, sharing science stories through various platforms, and designing interactive elements for the MSLC exhibit area that will inspire visitors.
In the summer the SIP will co‑instruct at least three multi‑day outdoor experiential education camps or curriculum‑based programs for youth. In the winter the participant will instruct curriculum‑based distance learning programs and may assist with frontline visitor services approximately one day per week.
QUALIFICATIONS- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an Ameri Corps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
- Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the host site.
- The applicant must be available to participate for the entire 36 weeks in order to be considered and participate.
- Background in science communication, interpretation, education, journalism, or any related field.
- Outdoor education and customer service experience.
- Desire to make science relevant to park visitors of all ages and demographics, with emphasis on youth aged 5‑20.
