Education Associate 2 (HIT Program Southeast Region Coordinator)

Location:

Douglas, Alaska. Responsibilities:
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Hunter Information & Training (HIT) Program seeks a dynamic and experienced educator to coordinate volunteer instructors to deliver certification courses in the Southeast Region.

  • Supporting volunteer instructors to deliver public hunter education, bowhunter education, muzzle loader education, and crossbow education courses.
  • Recruiting, training, coordinating, and evaluating instructors as well as assisting the HIT Program Coordinator with the development of course materials.
  • Providing teaching and administrative supplies to the volunteer instructors and maintaining contact with certification course students.
  • Acting as the first line of public contact for inquiries regarding the various certification classes, clinics, and activities offered by the HIT Program.
  • Assisting with the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW), and other shooting sports clinics/classes. Occasionally teaches certification classes.

The mission of the Division of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) is to conserve and enhance Alaska’s wildlife and habitats, and to provide a wide range of public uses and benefits. The HIT Program delivers firearms education certification courses, workshops, clinics, and camps, with the assistance of over 500 volunteer instructors, to recruit hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts.

Benefits

The Education Associate II is part of the HIT Program’s statewide team of eight staff and over 500 volunteer instructors. The position provides opportunities to work with dedicated volunteer instructors and the public, promoting safe hunting and shooting experiences. The role is based in the Douglas ADF&G regional office, with travel to the Juneau Hunter Education Shooting Complex. Schedule includes some evenings and weekends;

travel within the state is required.

Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of firearms, ammunition, firearms safety, hunting practices and culture.
  • Ability to establish, develop, and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff, volunteers, and the community.
  • Good planning and organizational skills, strong public speaking and writing skills.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively and coordinate multiple program components.
  • Ability to work irregular schedules, including weekends, evenings, and overnight stays.
Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college, preferably in administration and/or education. One year experience as an Education Associate 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere; or five years of experience in education, counseling or administrative services, with at least one year in a technical/paraprofessional role. Alternative options include substitution of graduate study or undergraduate study for required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Special Requirements
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Must be able to legally carry and effectively use firearms.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (training provided by the department at no cost).
  • Must be physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Specialized training required: NRA Range Safety Officer certification (provided by ADF&G).
