Under the general guidance of the Nikaitchuat Director, provides instructional assistance in an Inupiaq-speaking classroom to both small and large groups. Assists in planning and instruction of weekly thematic units based on cultural activities.

Upholds the organization’s mission, and values as well as demonstrates an understanding of and compliance with organization’s policies and procedures.

Promotes the organization’s mission and vision and demonstrates integrity, professionalism, accountability, cooperation with and consideration of others.

Essential Functions
  • Helps develop learning programs; collaborates with Teacher in planning and implementing the instruction program.
  • Participates in classroom activities by clarifying and explaining instructions, helping students use equipment and materials, motivating and encouraging students, reinforcing behaviors, promoting independence, and assisting students in exhibiting appropriate behavior.
  • Assists with group (inclusion) activities including drills, reading aloud, and storytelling; aids students in pull-out (isolation) setting; alerts teacher of problems or concerns.
  • Advises and counsels students; mediates problems between students.
  • Assists students with toilet activities as needed.
  • Fills in for Teacher when otherwise engaged or absent.
  • Prepares, copies, distributes, and files written materials as needed; aids with the production of manipulatives.
  • Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as required.
  • Safeguards the privacy of student records and other confidential information.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Tribal School staff, students, parents, and the public.
  • Models and encourages good housekeeping in the classroom and other learning areas; contributes to a safe and healthy environment in the classroom and surrounding areas; reports safety hazards promptly.
  • Administers first aid as needed.
  • Builds and fosters effective working relationships with others.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Traditional forms of government and tribal customs and traditions.
  • Applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Policies, functions, and responsibilities of the Native Village of Kotzebue, Northwest
  • Arctic Borough, and Alaskan Native lifestyle, culture, traditions, history, and needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience working with children in an educational setting preferred.
  • Ability to speak and/or understand lñupiaq.
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Must meet the requirements of the Child Care Associate under the State of Alaska Child Care Licensing Program within a year of accepting the position.
  • Must obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
