Job TitleEngineering Associate – DOT & PF Highways and Aviation, Fairbanks
Job SummaryAssist the Regional Maintenance Engineer with the development and maintenance of the Region’s force account preventive maintenance program, aggregate stockpiling program, contract administration, and emergency recovery while providing engineering and program support throughout the Northern Region.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with the Regional Maintenance Engineer to develop the Region’s force account preventive maintenance (PM) program and keep auditable records of completed work.
- Administer the Aggregate Stockpiling Program: understand site resources, coordinate new production contracts, identify future material needs, secure sale agreements, permits, mining plans, and related documentation.
- Assist in managing Supply and Construction contracts for M&O operations using AASHTOWare.
- Provide engineering and program support to M&O staff across the Northern Region, including engineering, funding, regulatory, and environmental requirements.
- Support emergency response and recovery efforts, responding to repairs when DOT infrastructure is damaged by fires, floods, earthquakes, or other natural disasters.

Working EnvironmentPosition is based in Fairbanks at the DOT & PF complex on Peger Road. The role involves fieldwork, office collaboration, Microsoft Teams use, and intermittent travel by small plane or boat. Candidates must thrive in a fast‑paced, variety‑rich environment.
Qualifications- Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying, or architecture, including one year as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska.
- ABET‑accredited coursework in engineering, architecture, land surveying, or related fields (see substitution criteria).
- Knowledge of civil engineering concepts, plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities, including buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems.
- Problem‑solving skills: identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations.
- Project management skills: knowledge of scheduling, coordinating, monitoring costs, work, and contractor performance.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Three (3) professional references (name, job title, phone).
- Transcripts if using education to meet minimum qualifications.
- Copy of current driver’s license at interview.
