Role OverviewTeck Alaska Incorporated — Red Dog Operations, one of the world’s largest producers of zinc concentrate, is recruiting for a Water Treatment Plant Operator to support safe, reliable water and wastewater operations in an arctic, off-grid industrial environment. Due to anticipated operational needs, we are recruiting for a career‑oriented professional to join our team.
Rotation schedule will be two weeks on-site and two weeks off-site.
Reporting to the Port Facility Supervisor
Key Responsibilities- Support compliance with Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), EPA, and Red Dog Operations environmental permits and discharge requirements.
- Monitor all treatment plant and pump station equipment, gauges, charts, and SCADA system data.
- Record, track, and evaluate statistical process data; perform trend analysis and complete required operational reports.
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair wastewater screening and treatment systems, including pumps, filters, controls, clarifiers, and chemical feed equipment.
- Collect wastewater samples and perform laboratory testing in accordance with ADEC and EPA NPDES permit requirements.
- Conduct QA/QC on lab equipment and analytical processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Ensure proper containment, labeling, and disposal of laboratory hazardous waste in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Calibrate, maintain, and repair instrumentation such as flow meters, turbidity meters, chlorine analyzers, and other water quality sensors.
- Respond to wastewater system concerns or operational issues and coordinate findings with the supervisor.
- Inspect, operate, and maintain potable water treatment systems, wells, chlorination systems, storage tanks, and distribution infrastructure.
- Perform routine testing and sampling to ensure compliance with ADEC Drinking Water Regulations.
- Maintain operational records including DMRs, sampling logs, consumption data, and maintenance reports.
- Locate and mark water lines prior to excavation activities; respond to leaks, pressure loss, or service outages.
- Provide clear, timely communication to Red Dog PORT PAC residents regarding planned service interruptions.
- Ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness of facilities, tools, and equipment through regular inspections and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Operate power tools, heavy equipment, and electrical systems associated with treatment and distribution facilities.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum ten (10) years of experience as a Water Plant Operator or equivalent industrial water treatment role.
- Alaska DEC Water Treatment Level II Certification (WT
2). - Working knowledge of potable water treatment systems, wastewater treatment processes, and distribution operations.
- Strong familiarity with laboratory testing, QA/QC protocols, and regulatory reporting practices.
- Knowledge of Alaska and Federal regulations governing water and wastewater operations, including ADEC, EPA, and OSHA standards.
- Ability to work safely in a remote Arctic industrial environment with extreme weather conditions
- ADEC Water Treatment Level III (WT
3) or Level IV (WT
4) preferred - Alaska DEC Water Distribution Certification (D2 or higher) preferred
- Experience with SCADA systems, remote telemetry, and arctic facility operations preferred
- Experience in mining, industrial operations, or remote site utilities preferred
