Position Overview

Department: Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT & PF), Southcoast Region Design & Engineering Services Location: Anywhere in Alaska (statewide)
Job Titles: Engineer/Architect 1 / Engineer/Architect 2 (flexibly staffed)

Base Salary
  • Engineer/Architect 1: $3,459.75 - $5,535.75 bi‑weekly (OT Ineligible)
  • Engineer/Architect 2: $3,699.75 - $5,919.75 bi‑weekly (OT Ineligible)
Responsibilities
  • Engineer/Architect 1: Under the general direction of a Design Manager or registered professional engineer, perform as Civil Engineer lead for small‑to‑medium‑sized capital improvement projects – including preliminary engineering, field reconnaissance, final design and advertising. Lead a multidisciplinary team through the development process for road and airport projects. Produce project deliverables (plans, specifications, estimates, and other engineering documents). Perform field reconnaissance as needed and mentor Engineering Assistants.
  • Engineer/Architect 2: Perform the same duties as the Engineer/Architect 1, but for medium‑to‑large‑sized capital improvement projects.

Working Environment

The role may require work in remote locations, urban centers, and across diverse terrain. Adaptability and resourcefulness are essential to maintain and improve roads, bridges, airports, ports, and public facilities in Alaska’s rugged and extreme climate.

Qualifications / Core Competencies
  • Civil Engineering knowledge: planning, design, construct, operate, and maintain highway and airport transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works.
  • Analytical Thinking / Problem Solving: logical, systematic approach to address problems using knowledge, experience, and resources.
  • Oral and Written Communication: clear and effective presentation to diverse audiences; attentive listening.
  • Valid Driver’s License (required).
  • Occasional travel within the coastal region of Alaska, including potential flight to remote communities.
Professional Registration

Engineer/Architect 1:
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect. Must be registered in Alaska; otherwise, must register within one year of hire and sign an agreement. For those not registered in Alaska, registration in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors is required, with comity under AS 08.48.191(b).

Engineer/Architect 2:
Same registration requirement plus one year of professional experience as an Engineer/Architect 1 or Engineering Associate in Alaska.
