Job Description
Title: Assistant Bridge Management Engineer (Technical Engineer/Architect 1/2 Flex)
Locations: Juneau, Anchorage, or Fairbanks, AK. The position may be filled at any of these locations.
Salary: Anchorage: $3,960.75 - $4,245.00 biweekly;
Fairbanks: $4,079.25 - $4,372.50 biweekly;
Juneau: $4,158.75 - $4,457.25 biweekly.
What you will be doing: As a member of our Bridge Section team you will collaborate closely with the Bridge Management Engineer to ensure compliance with federal requirements for bridge inspection, load ratings, commercial vehicle permits, and asset management. At the Technical Engineer 1 level you will help set standards, establish priorities, and resolve challenges in load rating and inspection practices.
At the Technical Engineer 2 level you will be the foremost expert in bridge analysis, load ratings, inspection techniques, and management protocols across the state.

Working environment: Flexible work schedules and teleworking options are available; travel within the state is typically two to four trips per year, potentially up to two weeks per trip. Bridge inspections may involve under‑bridge inspection trucks, lifts, or small aircraft, boats, or ATVs. The position is based in the DOT&PF headquarters in Juneau.
Core Competencies- Structural Engineering: Knowledge of concepts, principles, theories, and methods for designing and analyzing complex structures using various materials.
- Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: Logical, systematic approach to addressing problems or opportunities using knowledge, experience, and resources.
- Teaching Others: Ability to coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback to others.
- Transportation Engineering: Knowledge of planning, designing, and constructing transportation systems, including traffic analysis, pavement design, bridge construction, and environmental analysis.
- Compliance: Knowledge of procedures for assessing, evaluating, and monitoring compliance with federal laws, regulations, and guidance.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer with the State of Alaska Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors – 12 AAC 36.063.
- Meet training and experience requirements for Team Leader under National Bridge Safety Inspection Standards – 23 CFR 650

Technical Engineer 1 / Architect 1: Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect and at least two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1, Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska, or equivalent elsewhere.
Technical Engineer 2 / Architect 2: Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect and at least three years of professional engineering or architectural experience (Engineer/Architect 1 or higher), including one year as a Technical Engineer 1/Architect 1 or Engineer/Architect 2 with the State of Alaska, or equivalent elsewhere.
