The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for a Material Lab Coordinator – Engineering Assistant 2/3 Flex in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving.
Base Salary Information- Engineering Assistant 2: $39.67 / Hourly (OT Eligible)
- Engineering Assistant 3: $45.35 / Hourly (OT Eligible)
Engineering Assistant 2: Provides journey‑level technical support and assistance to the Southcoast Region Quality Assurance Engineer. Actively oversees day‑to‑day operations of the Southcoast Region Materials Laboratory (SRML), an AASHTO accredited lab, ensuring accurate and timely testing for Construction, Pre‑Construction, and Maintenance sections. Schedules, facilitates, and occasionally conducts laboratory work and mentors up to two certified technicians. Maintains national accreditation under AASHTO R18, adds new tests, handles equipment calibrations, stays current on program requirements, conducts material testing, and inputs AWP test data.
Engineering Assistant 3: Provides journey‑level technical support and assistance to the Southcoast Region Quality Assurance Engineer. Independently manages day‑to‑day operations of the SRML, ensuring accurate and timely operation, scheduling, facilitating, and occasionally conducting laboratory work. Mentors up to two certified technicians, maintains national accreditation under AASHTO R18, adds new tests, performs equipment calibrations, stays current on requirements, conducts material testing, and inputs AWP test data.

The working environment you can expectPosition located in Juneau. Work may involve remote, urban, or challenging terrain with extreme weather. Requires ability to read and interpret design plans, develop engineering solutions onsite, and manage projects in Southeast and Southwest Alaska.
Who We Are Looking For- Materials Engineering: Knowledge of materials composition, structure, properties, and performance under environmental influences.
- Road Work and Pavement: Knowledge of methods and tools to construct, maintain, or repair road surfaces.
- Quality Assurance: Knowledge of QA/QC principles and tools.
- Professionalism: Accountability, efficient work habits, clear communication, teamwork, emotional intelligence, integrity, and ethical behavior.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Must achieve and maintain WAQTC certifications in all modules within 6 months of hire.
- NICET Level II certification in Soils, Asphalt, and Concrete required within 1 year of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution.
- One year of entry‑level engineering, architectural, or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent.
